The history of Pentacle mages in the Fairbanks North Star Borough has been a tumultuous one. In 2002, the mages on the Consilium Council, along with the Hierarch were required to deal with an external threat alone. The Hierarch barely returned. He favored stepping down for a successor, and under cited powers from the small public section of the former charter, elevated each of the provosts to Councilor. The provosts, who the Council had deliberately left behind, were faced with the sudden responsibility of rule. The previous Council had hidden their charter before their departure, and the departing Hierarch felt no desire to impart its location stating, “We made serious errors. You should not be bound by our mistakes.” In the end, the three major cabals of Fairbanks, the Dark Crafters, the Watchmen, and the Broken Ones came together and drafted a new charter. Signed into existence in early 2005, this document provided provisions for every eventuality the Council could conceive of and allowed avenues for future additions. The Councilors who drafted the document also elected a member from the general membership to Hierarch. Over the course of 2005 a number of problems arose, including a surge in Seer interference in the community. A group of Banishers began surveillance on the mages, and that winter the Ice Raptors appeared. One councilor and several members were severely mauled attempting to gain information on the strange creatures. In the midst of this, the Banishers began making their move on the Consilium. Little was resolved on either situation heading into early 2006. Internal strife and external pressure kept the mages from any meaningful solutions. Some mages conducted searches for the former Councilors’ sanctums. A number were found, well-hidden and abandoned. One even contained clues to the source of the Ice Raptors. The summer of 2006 marked a fundamental shift in the political landscape of Fairbanks among mages. A simultaneous assault on the three of the four main sanctums of the Consilium decimated the local mage population. Nearly 200 people, some mages, some sleepwalkers, even some Sleepers participated in the assault. Several Consilium mages lost their lives, many fled the city entirely, and the three sanctums were decimated, but not destroyed. The clean up and cover up began immediately. It was a task made considerably harder by the sudden influx of both ghosts and spirits, all low level, who came to pester and haunt the surviving mages. Councilor Cray, the Thyrsus Councilor and a Master of Spirit was driven to the brink of insanity and forced to leave the area. The end of 2006 and early 2007 were all about survival for the mages of Fairbanks. With their primary resource base destroyed, a bunker mentality set in. The Ice Raptors were again rampant that winter, but the mages clung to the Sleeper populace and their mundane roles and passed largely unnoticed. The summer of 2007 saw the first influx of new mages to Fairbanks in over a year. With their arrival, the surviving Councilors began to reorganize the mages of Fairbanks and began the long slow process of rebuilding. There are mounting problems in Fairbanks long unaddressed. The Ice Raptors are becoming bolder every winter. The ley map of Fairbanks has shifted since the previous Council. Newly awakened mages wander confused and afraid throughout the Fairbanks area, with no Pentacle mages watching for them or providing them with shelter. Banishers have been left to breed and grow for over two years, free to search the populace for new recruits and fresh converts. |
